Gun violence in southeast Ottawa

There has been a disturbing trend toward increased gunplay in my part of town. These are almost exclusively gang-related incidents where dealers are taking potshots at other dealers if they see the competition infringing on their territory.

Gang-related or not, there needs to be a stronger response from all community leaders, not only the Ottawa Police. And this needs to happen quickly, before a stray bullet hurts or kills a bystander like this 15 year old in Vancouver.

It’s really only a matter of time.

But like I noted, what should happen in addition to a stronger police response (whatever that exactly looks like) is a full community response to the crisis; and yes, this is a crisis. By “full community”, I mean the OPS, the City of Ottawa, the area Community Associations and the School Boards. Four distinct bodies that need to work toward common ends that will stop this trend in its tracks.

And yes, I include the School Boards as one of these four entities.

Speaking about the number 4, Ottawa has four, count ’em four, Boards within its borders. Yes. Four.

But I’ll leave that for another time…

Anyway, all of these Boards, but primarily the largest of them – the OCDSB and the OCSB – have a stake in the mitigation of this emerging crisis. They too have a responsibility to work with the CAs, the police and the City representatives and elected officials.

So, let’s get moving on this! And yes, I’m looking at you too, OCDSB and OCSB, because while we have been hearing about useful sessions with the communities hosted by the OPS and City Councilors, there has been nary a peep from our local Trustees.

At least nothing I’ve been told about…

Helping out Clifford Bowey PS…

… in the Aviva Fund competition.

Hi all – PSA time: Clifford Bowey PS has moved into the Aviva Fund Semi-Finals! I like to think that our school community last year helped Vincent Massey win this competition – and a new playground!

Please visit the site and register and VOTE – one vote per day is allowed.

Spread the word and let’s help this very special school build a new accessible playground.

Back to school today!

And if I see one vehicle ignore the flashing lights of a school bus, I will chase you and hunt you down.,

I will.

Please be mindful of buses, students and crossing guards. Don’t be a moron.

I need some help from the Ottawa Twitter and Facebook communities…

… in trying to track down some scumbags who defiled Pleasant Park School (OCDSB: JK -> 6… yeah, little kids) with some truly disgusting graffiti at some point over the past few days.

As in TRULY disgusting. Swastikas. Racist crap. The works.

The police are not likely to be able do anything other than log it as a report and look for similar incidents in the area. This kind of  crap is fairly rare. We have been pretty lucky in our community until now.

So, please re-post, and re-Tweet.  Maybe someone can come forward to the police with any info that may lead to identifying the worthless pieces of sewage who did this.

Friday miscellany – schools, Pink Floyd and a moron in a bad suit…

The Ontario government announced the other day that 4 new schools will be built in Ottawa and a 6 room addition will be tacked onto an existing school.

On Wednesday morning, Education Minister Leona Dombrowsky visited Ecole Laurier-Carrière, a French Catholic elementary school in Nepean, to announce it will receive a six-classroom addition under a program that will also see four new schools built in Ottawa over the next three years. They are among 43 new schools and 30 additions to be built across the province under the $650-million program, which was approved as part of the Ontario Liberals’ most recent budget.

The French Catholic school board will get a new secondary school in Kanata’s Fernbank neighbourhood and a new elementary school in Barrhaven’s Chapman Mills neighbourhood. The French public school board will add a new secondary school in Kanata and the OCDSB will get a new elementary school in Barrhaven.

Of course, other schools in the public system are bursting at the seams and their communities are crying foul! North Kanata in particular is in desperate need of a new school. In the east end too are schools that have seen rapid population influxes but not extra school capacity.

And I won’t even start on the number of portables that have become a permanent fixture at many schools.

Hmmm… I do note that Catholic Boards are getting 2 new schools and the addition… hmmm…

Here’s a radical thought that I may have mentioned once or twice before:

Abolish Ontario’s Catholic school system and there would be enough $ to fund all of the schools that are needed!

Schools that do NOT discriminate based on religion!

Of course, I am not expecting any pol from any party to make this a rallying cry in the fall election. Which is too bad.

A last word (at least for now) on the post-game violence in Vancouver the other day.

Stupidest comment award goes to… ta-da!

Don “I’m a moron” Cherry for blaming the riots on left wing pinkos and the left wing pinkos in government who apparently restricted police from beating the shit out of the rioters in the streets.

Cherry has to share some of the blame for these riots. He advocates violence, glorifies war and ridicules anyone who dares to oppose him

C’mon CBC – show some guts and ditch this dinosaur!

The Rolling Stone magazine recently did a feature on the 10 best album covers of all time. Album covers used to be something whose meanings were debated over beers, hotly anticipated in advance of a band’s new release and were in fact a unique art form.

RS picked as Number 2 what I would have chosen as Number 1.

Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was picked as #1 and I can see why, but I would still put Dark Side of the Moon ahead of anything. I really don’t think there is a cover that is immediately so recognizable to so many.

But I was disappointed that this one – Led Zeppelin IV – didn’t make it on the list:

I guess an argument can be made for several Zep covers – Physical Graffiti and The Houses of the Holy come immediately to mind.

However, in this age of downloadable music, album covers are a relic – but one to be appreciated.

Finally, I want to wish my baby sister a Happy Birthday! I can’t believe it has been XX years since she was born! I can remember it like it was yesterday. Had a big beach party in her honour on the night of her birth!

Look what those good ol’ boyz are up to in Alberta!

Alberta parents will soon be able to cherry-pick what their kids can and cannot be taught in the province’s schools.

Think that gays and lesbians are hell-bound monstrosities sent to earth by Satan?

No worries!  You can pull your kid out of the class that teaches about sexual orientation (and I guess tolerance and human rights might be taught in these classes too!)

Think that humans were created by a big bearded guy who lives in the sky?

Piece of cake! That Grade 9 biology class where they teach that pesky little “theory” called evolution is NO place for little Johnny!

School boards will have to give parents written advance notice any time classes deal “primarily or explicitly” with religion, human sexuality and sexual orientation, or risk facing a human rights complaint as punishment..

This is obviously a move designed to keep the christian wackos happy and the back wood rednecks from reachin’ for their guns.

I have no problem at all with parents choosing how they want little Johnny or Jane taught. That’s what private schools are for.  But if you want to suck at the teat of publicly-funded education, then accept the curriculum as designed by the educators!

Next thing you know, they’ll have separate but publicly-funded school baords and schools based on religion or language!

Wait a minute, that’s Ontario!
