Friday miscellany…

… no particular theme edition…

A big problem with social media is that it gives idiots, racists, bigots, misogynists, etc., a tool to spew their ignorant venom.

And such was the case the other night after Joel Ward scored in OT to knock the Bruins put of the NHL playoffs.

Assholes.

A successful Wildrose candidate blamed urban Alberta for the PC win the other day.

Bikman said Tuesday: “I think that these social issues that came up during the last week and the PC’s ability to exploit them, caused some concern in the voters within urban areas, at least, because they didn’t really understand the issues, they didn’t really understand that there was an aspect of free speech.”

Bikman also said rural people “possess more common sense, a least that’s my experience.

“The people who make their living off the land really seem to understand the way nature really works.”

Yup, Myrtle, you country-folk have way more sense than those city-folk with all that learnin’ and stuff!

LOL!

Lots of email phishing going on these days. Even if you know the sender, think twice about clicking on links if something seems not quite right…

I wonder where that phish has gone.
You did love it so. You looked after it like a son.
And it went wherever I did go.
Is it in the cupboard?
Yes! Yes! No!…
Wouldn’t you like to know? It was a lovely little phish.
And it went wherever I did go.
It’s behind the sofa!
Where can that phish be?
It is a most elusive phish!
And it went wherever I did go.
Ooooh, phishy, phishy, phishy phish!
A-phish, a-phish, a-phish, a-phishy, ooooh.
Ooooh, phishy, phishy, phishy phish!
That went wherever I did go.

Out of the WTF is THIS file:

Egyptian husbands will soon be legally allowed to have sex with their dead wives for up to six hours after their death, local media is claiming.

The controversial new law is claimed to be part of a raft of measures being introduced by the Islamist-dominated parliament.

It will also see the minimum age of marriage lowered to 14 and the ridding of women’s rights of getting education and employment.

I’m at a loss on this one, kids…
¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨
And another one from the WTF is THIS files:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper was shouted down during a debate in question period Thursday on the Afghanistan mission for suggesting the NDP – not yet in existence – didn’t even support Canada’s military involvement in the Second World War.

NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair was asking Harper if he intended to extend the Afghanistan mission past 2014 after a Postmedia News report Wednesday said U.S officials had asked Canadian special forces to stay past the withdrawal date.

The prime minister responded the NDP has a pacifistic ideology “regardless of circumstances” and his government would make the right decision for Afghanistan’s security.

“In 1939, the NDP leader didn’t even want to support the fight against Hitler,” Harper said, before being drowned out by cat calls.

“CCF, NDP, same difference,” Harper responded curtly.

As my brother pointed out on Facebook:

If memory serves me correctly, the NDP didn’t support Canada’s involvement in WWI, supported a policy of Canadian neutrality in both the War of 1812 AND the Seven Years’ War – what a bunch of granola eating, tree hugging, whale protecting pacifists!

Mr. Harper is in clear need of a remedial history class. What a kook!

Even though I’m not a fan, congrats to the Ottawa Senators for a great season… the future looks brighter for these guys than for mine

Speaking of the Leafs, there are rumours going around that Roberto Luongo has identified the Buds as one of the teams he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause in his (over-inflated) contract to play for. After careful consideration of the pros and cons, I have the following advice for Brian Burke:
DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!
IT WOULD BE ONE OF THE WORST DECISIONS THAT YOU HAVE MADE… AND YOU HAVE QUITE A COLLECTION GOING ALREADY!!!!
STAY. WAY. FROM. LUONGO!
I think Reimer needs to be given another chance, plus there are some great young goalies (e.g., Ben Scrivens) that should be developed. The Leafs would have to give up the fifth pick and/or a top prospect like Jake Gardiner.
ARE YOU LISTENING, BRIAN????????????

Finally – from the news this morning… might Canadians FINALLY be paying attention?

An NDP surge following the party’s leadership convention has put them in a statistical tie with the federal Conservatives, a new poll suggests.

The Nanos Research monthly tracking poll puts the Conservatives at 34.7 per cent and the New Democrats at 32.4 per cent of committed voters, within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

The Liberals are at 23.3 per cent, according to the poll, the Greens at 4.2 per cent and the Bloc Québécois at 3.9 per cent of committed voters. Almost 19 per cent of voters said they were undecided.

The poll suggests the Conservatives’ popularity slipped one percentage point — well within the margin of error — from a previous poll of 1,203 Canadians conducted in February, while the NDP are up 7.4 percentage points.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s leadership numbers, however, appear to have dropped dramatically. While 31.7 per cent of those polled two months ago said he was most trustworthy party leader, that number fell to 20 per cent in April.

Nanos is reliable. Let’s see if this is the beginning of a wonderful trend as Harper’s “trust” numbers plummet even further!

Friday miscellany – robots, OC Transpo and the Leafs!

It’s about time the Board moved to do something about the negative image and messages that Christmas imparts!

Way to go Androgynous, Holiday-Neutral Robot! Long may you, uh, live…

Thanks to the O-dot for breaking this story…

So a UBC study has found that we atheists are as distrusted as, um, rapists (?)

The research, led by UBC psychology doctoral student Will Gervais, found distrust to be the central factor motivating antagonism toward atheists among the religious.

“Where there are religious majorities – that is, in most of the world – atheists are among the least trusted people,” Gervais said in a release.

“With more than half a billion atheists worldwide, this prejudice has the potential to affect a substantial number of people.”

Researchers believe the negative perception of atheists may stem from some people’s understanding of morality; a 2002 Pew poll suggests nearly half of Americans believe morality is impossible without belief in god.

Wait just a cotton-pickin’ minute here! Do people actually buy this? Seriously? You can’t have morals without believing in a deity?

I suspect that one of two things are happening here. Either, a) the study’s methodology is flawed somehow, or b) we are nowhere as evolved as we pretend to be.

But, unless this is refuted, maybe y’all should give me a wide berth… just in case… no morals, ya know…

So Canada will most definitely pull out of Kyoto – but not because of our backwards environmental policies, nope. There is a much better reason than simply refusing to acknowledge the obvious that we are dinosaurs when it comes to the environment.

Yup – we don’t like the meeting facilities in Durban.

Rumours were rife around Durban’s “International Conference Centre” today as it became apparent that Canada has expressed intention to pull out of the Kyoto Protocol having seen the state of the meeting facilities in the South African city. Already rattled by being told not to walk the streets after dark, the discovery that the delegation offices are in a bona fide underground car park was just too much for the reticent North American delegation. “I don’t care if they’ve put a carpet down and scattered a few pot plants”, said one senior delegate, “it’s still a f***ing parking lot. If that’s the best they can do then we’ve had it with Kyoto. We’re outta here”. On leaving they added “what’s more the wifi is rubbish. I can’t even facebook during KP plenaries”.

Meanwhile, all is happy and blonde back home as Michelle Rempel minds the shop for the “Environment” Minister.

Then, with surely her finest 30 seconds so far, she took aim at Justin Trudeau. “Mr. Speaker, I would like to remind my colleague opposite of a few things with regard to environment policy and energy policy. First, emissions increased in this country under their government, and a policy that he should be especially familiar with, the National Energy Policy, lost thousands of jobs across the country.”

The House erupted in noise. The Speaker called for order. Ms. Rempel added an Al Gore reference—”inconvenient truths”—for good measure.

She had looked serious in her interventions all afternoon, but back in her seat she beamed. She will probably be Foreign Affairs Minister by summer.

Oh goody. Another Con Cabinet Minister with little between the ears.

THE LEAFS ARE NO LONGER CONTROLLED BY THE TEACHER’S PENSION FUND!!!! WOO-HOO!!!!!!

“MLSE teams are among the most popular major-league franchises in North America, iconic sports brands watched and loved by millions of fans across our nation. As Canada’s largest and most established communications company, Bell is proud to be part of this all-Canadian acquisition of a world leader in sports and entertainment,” said George Cope, President and CEO of Bell Canada and BCE in a statement.

OC Transpo! Get with the friggin’ program!!!!

Good to see Councillor Tim Tierney pushing the issue and forcing the transit authority to move quicker in its implementation of full system GPS coverage! Having real-time data will improve service and increase productivity all over Ottawa!  Think about it – if my bus is running ten minutes late, those are ten minutes that can be used in a more productive way than standing at the bus stop.

Manchester United and Manchester City – HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Finally….

(5403)

I am super happy to announce the following…

After a spiritual awakening that occurred at about 3:09 this morning, I have decided to discard the Trashy’s World that existed pre-3:09 am and instead dedicate it to the following purposes:

1) Praise and nothing but praise for our Prime Minister Stephen Harper! He, and those good men and women who serve him tirelessly are good and right. They always have been and always will be. This blog shall become a shrine to Good Stephen… and those who serve him.

2) I will post in praise of Ontario’s separate school system. I now see that a system of education that eschews God is a tool for the Devil. I will immediately be registering my children in Ottawa’s Catholic School system… or an even more traditional and pious system, if I can find one.

3) I shall no longer criticize those of Faith. Indeed, they and I are now one! I may even enter the priesthood if my wife is OK with that.

4) I shall no longer worship false idols like the Toronto Maple Leafs, Arsenal, Honesty in Politics, or Nice Weather. Instead, I shall honour only Saint Stephen and that big bearded guy in the sky.

5) This blog will nevermore use reason, evidence-based facts or logic upon which to make an argument. It will instead use dogma and spiritual guidance… and whatever Stephen says.

6) Speaking of the Leafs, I shall no longer… cheer for them… instead, I throw all of my allegiance behind the, uh, Montre….

NO – I CAN’T GO THAT FAR!

Happy April Fool’s Day everyone!

This just in – godless socialists responsible for garbage strike – film at 11.

Kinsella has unearthed yet another priceless diatribe penned by a contributor to that most “honourable” group called “Blogging Tories”.

He is going so far to claim that the denizens of T.O. deserve what they get re: the civic workers strike because they keep electing socialists.  Apparently this is the reason why my beloved Leafs and Jays have also has a few bad years.

OK. A few more than a few.

Yeah – socialism is to blame for everything, I guess. This guy calls himself a “christian”, so I guess he sees the citizens of Hogtown the same way as he’s see Soviets – as “godless” socialists?

Religion and ReformCons… a weird but dangerous mix. Don’t read before operating heavy equipment!

Untimely death of an ex-Bud

Zezel was one of my fave Leafs back in the early 90’s when we came oh-so-close to ending the drought.

No a big D-man – especially by today’s standards – but was a tough checker who held his own against larger players.

I remember reading about his rare and horrible disease a few years back. It was, by all accounts, really tough on the guy… especially the meds that he had to take to control the disease  – which caused massive weight gain.  For an ex-pro athlete, losing control of your body like that must have been hellish.

So long Peter, Leaf Nation mourns your loss.
