Christians

Shows in technicolour…

… that some members of the ReformCon caucus are regressive throwbacks to the 19th century.

I’m sure they prefer “their women” to stay in the kitchen too.

Freaks.

Huh?

Update to this story… looks like this kid was aggressively proselytizing, ergo, he should be voted off the island..

A Nova Scotia student suspended from classes for five days for wearing a T-shirt with the slogan “Life Is Wasted Without Jesus” returned to school today wearing the same garment, but he was quickly taken home by his father.

William Swinimer, who’s in Grade 12, was scheduled to attend a session for all students on how to express their beliefs in a way that is respectful to all.

But John Swinimer said he wants Forest Heights Community School in Chester Basin, Lunenburg County, to only teach the basic courses, leaving religion out of it.

Students said William Swinimer has been preaching his Christian beliefs, making them feel uncomfortable, and the shirt was the last straw, so they complained.

IF this is the full story, then that school in Nova Scotia should give its politically-correct head a shake!

Now y’all KNOW that I’m a grumpy ol’ atheist. Always have been and will be… BUT COME ON PEOPLE!

Unless the message on the shirt is racist or otherwise offensive, the kid should be free to wear it… regardless of how silly I think the message might be.

I guess, however, it depends on what one classified as “offensive”, doesn’t it?

If the kid was handing bibles or the Koran, or the Manifesto of the Leprechaun Lordships, then he should cease and desist. But a T shirt? Naw. Whatever.

Rally against the right to choose. That’s “right”. As in r-i-g-h-t!

Doesn’t look like 12,000 to me! Maybe 4,000? Certainly not the turnout they had expected.

In any case, they had better have dispersed by the time I leave work. If they delay my bus going through the downtown, I’ll have some “choice” words for them!

The problem is going to be that now that they have a majority government in their corner, they are going to be emboldened to have more of these rallies.

Fine. That is their choice – just as it is a woman’s choice to decide what is best for her body!

Those crazy Americans are at it yet again!

Yo. I’m willing to wager that if you read this blog at all, you are at the very least adequately intelligent and coherent to know that there are some people on this planet whose mere inhalations of air should be considered as theft. They should not be allowed to draw down any of the natural or produced capital that nature or we humans have provided.

Bob Marshall is one of these people.

The Drive-by Times reports that this wing-nut believes that:

women who have a first abortion are more likely to have children with disabilities. He described it as “nature doing its vengeance on subsequent children…”

But wait! There’s more! Here is what he has to say about rape:

Your origins should not be held against you [referring to the victim’s unborn child]. The woman becomes a sin-bearer of the crime, because the right of a child predominates over the embarrassment of the woman.

And birth control:

We’re against the IUD and pills, too. They don’t prevent ovulation and conception, they prevent implantation, which is abortion.

Late Monday, his office released a formal apology.

But I wonder how many Canadians hold these type of views… more than a few, I wager.

State and religion… they should never, ever be mixed! Even if the cause seems to be worthy on the outside, zealots always, ALWAYS have an ulterior motive!

Government and religion bashing is grand, but…

Regular readers know very well that this blog’s themes are more or less as follows:

The list is in no particular order and largely reflects personal political leanings that have been defined over my adult life. I naturally gravitate to the left of the spectrum. I am also an atheist and cannot now and never will understand why otherwise sane and smart people are drawn so deeply into religious mythologies.

There are, of course, exceptions to these themes. I will often talk about my kids, my travels (another set of China entries coming up in a couple of months!) or just random stuff. But by and large, my scribblings have been pretty negative most of the time and over the last couple of days I have reflected on this.

I am not normally a negative guy. It’s just that discussions about politics and religion bring out that side of me. I guess it’s because I am really passionate and have deep-seated beliefs about both of these subjects and like to get up on the soapbox to scream out loud about how I know better.

And the bitch of it is that these types of posts garner a lot of traffic on my site. The more vindictive the post, the more visits I get. I normally average about 40-50 hits a day. But when I pen a vicious diatribe that equates Stevie to something less than a corner-dwelling sewer rat, the traffic doubles or triples.

But after reading a few of the notes I have penned over the past few months, I have decided to stray away from the negative, attack-ad style posts in favour of something different. I don’t yet know what that “something different” will look like – it will evolve over time.

I started this blog as a creative outlet that I could use to write about things that were different in style and substance from what I do for a living. So I am going to return to this for a while and write a little more about the things that drew me to blogging in the first place.

No, Trashy ain’t gonna let Stevo completely off the hook! I will still lambaste him, his ReformCon cronies, right-wing politics and stuff of a non-secular nature. But just not quite so much.

Bye Orel. Glad to see the last of you!

Hope you enter your next life as a female baby in a fundamentalist Islamic family in Afghanistan who gets pregnant at 14 years of age.

Or a gnat on a rat.

OK – the latter would be cooler.

Catholic bishop has kiddie porn – BIG surprise!

I mean, after the last few decades of sexual indiscretions by officials in the RC church, can anyone be shocked by this?

What hypocricy! All will be forgiven in his confession next Sunday but the damage goes on and on and on.  Kids have suffered because of this so-called respected member of the community’s sick tastes.

If you are a practicing catholic, how the hell do you kneel in church every Sunday and listen to these perverts talk about salvation when they are so far from it?

Seriously. How do you do it? And don’t give me the line about these men being the exception to the rule. It seems that sexual deviance (and child porn is indeed a deviance) is more the rule here?

I would LOVE to have someone explain to me why these men are still held in high esteem. Anyone?

Beuller?

God damn it all! It’s National Blasphemy Day

Thanks to the Squid-dude for making me aware of this!

Feel free to celebrate on this day the right to demean whatever fantasy creature you see fit!

Blasphemy Day International is an international campaign seeking to establish September 30th as a national day to promote free speech and stand up in a show of solidarity for the freedom to mock and insult religion without fear of murder, violence, and reprisal. It is the obligation of the world’s nations to safeguard dissent and the dissenters, not to side with the brutal interests of thugs who demand “respect” for their beliefs (i.e., immunity to being criticized or mocked or they threaten violence).

So if you support free speech, and the rights of those who disagree with religious views to voice their opinions peacefully, support our group and join the cause!

Hmmmm… betcha  stuff like this sends the christian right into conniption fits!

There is even a Facebook group!

Those wacky christians are at it again!

Good post by Ken over at My Corner of the Universe.

Yes, Christians need to chill. They are in a bit of a siege mentality lately as they are railing against windmills coming at them from all directions.

A Christian group is calling for the removal of an elephant statue, modeled after a Hindu god, from the Calgary Zoo calling it “selective religious partiality.”

“The zoo is not a place of religious indoctrination, it is supposed to be a safe family environment free of religious icons and selective religious partiality,” Blake wrote

<and>

Jim Blake, national chairman of Concerned Christians Canada, sent a letter to the zoo on Thursday, calling for the sculpture to be removed.

Reminds me of The Simpsons episode:

In the episode “Homer the Heretic,” Springfield’s multifaith volunteer fire department mobilizes to save the Simpsons’ home–and Homer’s life. Reverend Lovejoy explains to Homer that God was working through his friends and neighbors, including a Christian like Ned Flanders and a Jew like Krusty.

But the minister comes up short when he points toward the other firefighter, Apu Nahaasapeemapetilon. After a nonplussed pause, the minister characterizes the convenience store operator’s religion as “miscellaneous.” This level of ignorance is too much for the normally mild-mannered Asian immigrant. Apu explodes: “Hindu! There are 700 million of us!” Corrected, Lovejoy replies with condescension, “Aw, that’s super.”

Pork barrelling – deuxième partie – spas and schools…

There are some great observations out in the blogosphere about how some of the Harperite’s crazy cash (aka Economic Stimulus Funding) is being doled out.

I wrote a note about this last week with regards to Clement’s refurbishing of public washrooms in Muskoka. One commenter to that post rightly pointed out that it is the habit of politicians to roll out the ol’ pork barrel when they have the opportunity. I agreed but noted that the ReformCons seem to do it more than the Grits did while in power.

Happily,  we (as in you and I) are giving the spa industry a much needed massage:

The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, today announced the awarding of $200,000 in repayable funding to Spa Le Montagnais under the Community Economic Diversification Initiative – Vitality to undertake the work necessary to establish a Nordic spa… The coexistence of a Nordic spa with other local attractions is bound to attract novelty-seeking visitors.

But giving 4 million smackeroos to a private christian school? Well that takes the cake and it strongly offensive for a hell-bound(1) atheist like me.
harper-christian-fundamentalist-school-alberta
I thought we were a secular nation… you know… all that separation of church and state and stuff.

If so, why are Canadian taxpayers footing part of the bill for this project? IMO, this is clearly a case where the religious right is being thanked for its unwavering support for the Harperite socially conservative agenda.

Thanks to Paulitics for pointing this out.

Question – who goes to these schools? There does seem to be a lot of them. Especially out west.

Anyhow, we’re gonna see a lot more of this crap, so I am already planning out the 3rd pork barrelling post, and the fourth and the fifth….

1. As an atheist, I obviously don’t believe in the existence of a heaven or hell, or valhalla… or leprechauns either. But christians sure think I’m destined for fire and brimstone!
