So, OC Transpo…

… when did it become OK to allow Christian proselytizing on your buses?

I find this offensive:

And just a couple of ad slots along is yet another ad for a church in Kanata!

What gives? As I recall, there was quite a to-do when (if I recall correctly) the Canadian Freethought Association wanted to put atheist-oriented ads on buses. Initially, the ads were refused but then subsequently approved by City Council.

But I don’t recall any column inches or Council discussion being devoted (forgive the pun) to these new ads. Did I miss something?

The danger of religion…

…the harm that Stone Age thinking has done and continues to do.

Here is a great article penned by Neil MacDonald, who discusses a new book (Lawrence Wright’s investigative book, Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief),that looks at Scientology and the power that it can wield in American society. And while granted that the Scientology kooks are the extreme, the same can be said to some degree for most of the other mainstream religions.

Take the Catholic Church. What other global organisation can you think of that as a matter of policy has for years shielded some of its members accused of and guilty of systematic child molestation.

Or, common to Catholicism and most sects of Protestantism, gays and lesbians are considered abominations.

Or take how, under the guise of Islam, how women and young girls are routinely descrimanted against, physically abused and prevented from the same opportunities as men.

Faith. The crimes committed in its name.

After the FBI uncovered evidence in the 1960s that Scientology had systematically infiltrated government departments with church spies, Scientology’s tax-exempt status was revoked, triggering a two-decade war with Washington.

According to Wright, the church in that time filed 2,500 lawsuits, swamping government lawyers. Scientology agents dug into the private lives of IRS staff, looking for evidence of drinking or marital cheating, then planted news stories on them.

It offered a $10,000 reward for dirt on the tax agency.

Eventually, the IRS backed down, defeated. But fight any temptation to cheer.

Effectively, what we have here is a profit-making machine that disregarded the law to pursue restitution of its tax-exempt status, which in turn made it even more potent, even more immune to the rules that govern the rest of us.

Yes, other big profit-making entities push government around, too — just take a look at Wall Street — but none has the body armour of a church.

Skeptical? Ask yourself this: If it were proved that senior employees of Microsoft, or Bank of America, had been sexually assaulting minors worldwide for decades, overwhelmingly young boys in their care, and senior company management had been complicit, either ignoring the abuse or actually taking steps to cover it up in order to protect the company’s image, how long would it be before that company would be facing a Justice Department strike force? Or bankruptcy?

Yet the Roman Catholic Church was, at most, dented by such horrific revelations. Individual priests have been charged worldwide, yes. But efforts to hold the church hierarchy responsible for the crimes that were covered up have been exceedingly rare.

Catholic bishop has kiddie porn – BIG surprise!

I mean, after the last few decades of sexual indiscretions by officials in the RC church, can anyone be shocked by this?

What hypocricy! All will be forgiven in his confession next Sunday but the damage goes on and on and on.  Kids have suffered because of this so-called respected member of the community’s sick tastes.

If you are a practicing catholic, how the hell do you kneel in church every Sunday and listen to these perverts talk about salvation when they are so far from it?

Seriously. How do you do it? And don’t give me the line about these men being the exception to the rule. It seems that sexual deviance (and child porn is indeed a deviance) is more the rule here?

I would LOVE to have someone explain to me why these men are still held in high esteem. Anyone?

A sobering view on religion and the damage that is has caused and can cause…

Bill Maher – while I may not always agree with his political views – he does hit it on the head with this clip.

Thanks to The Squiddude for posting it!

Yes Virginia, there are some craaaaaaaaazy Christians in the good ol’ US of A

Thanks once again to Darin o’er at the Squid Zone for pointing out that there are indeed folks on this planet who are crazier than a drunken Parry Sounder during huntin’ season… this group takes the cake.

Seriously, in full understanding that there are some freaks that roam the hiways and biways, the The Creation Science Association for Mid-America preaches intolerance and downright (and heck, in their warped little world – righteous) violence against anyone who happens to not agree with their uneducated, ignorant and warped view of the world.

Here are some the the headliners from their newsletter:

  • Should Evolutionists Be Allowed to Roam Free in the Land?
  • Why Are Evolutionists Typically Socialists

and they (I’m not making this up) recommend the following:

Clearly then, “evolutionists should not be allowed to roam free in the land.” All that remains for us to discuss is“What should be done with evolutionists?” For the purposes of this essay, I will ignore the minor issue of Western-style jurisprudence and merely mention possible solutions to the “evolutionism problem,” leaving the legal details to others:

  • Labor camps. Their fellow believers were high on these. But, my position would be that most of them have lived their lives at, or near the public trough. So, after their own beliefs, their life should continue only as long as they can support themselves in the camps.
  • Require them to wear placards around their neck, or perhaps large medallions which prominently announce “Warning:Evolutionist! Mentally Incompetent – Potentially Dangerous.” I consider this option too dangerous.
  • Since evolutionists are liars and most do not really believe evolution we could employ truth serum or water-boarding to obtain confessions of evolution rejection. But, this should, at most, result in parole, because, like Muslims, evolutionist religion permits them to lie if there is any benefit to them.
  • An Evolutionist Colony in Antarctica could be a promising option. Of course inspections would be required to prevent too much progress. They might invent gunpowder.
  • A colony on Mars would prevent gunpowder from harming anyone but their own kind, in the unlikely event they turned out to be intelligent enough to invent it.
  • All options should include 24-hour sound system playing Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris reading Darwin’s Origin of Species, or the preservation of Favored Races by Means of Natural Selection. Of course some will consider this cruel & unusual, especially since they will undoubtedly have that treatment for eternity.
  • Man- if there are really freaks like this who are allowed to run loose and spew this crap, then maybe the human race really is screwed.

I end this post with Darin’s last point:

    3. People like this can get access to nuclear weapons in the USA. Sleep well tonight with that knowledge.
