I could actually sort of maybe kinda support a ban on abortion if it came with taxes on churches that went to pay for support programs for single moms and abandoned kids as well as a comprehensive sex education program starting from primary school and free birth control.

I’m willing to wager the god-whallopers who want to ban abortion aren’t willing to step up and fix the hypocrisy of their position though.

You don’t have to ban abortion to win this year. That’s where you aren’t paying attention to the Americans. You just need to take a slice off the salami. Make some rules so that women have to start jumping though a hoop here and there. There will be another opportunity to take off another slice. This is a long term goal, and I suspect they are planning each little slice. It’s a ten year plan.

As further evidence I offer this: It was a sacrificeable back-bench yob who brought this up. If it was a serious initiative, the front-line cabal would have been bringing it up.

If it goes poorly, Harper can say “yeah, we’ve got all kinds, and we tolerate them, aren’t we awesome… tolerance, that’s our mantra”

If it goes well, Harper can say “yeah, we’re in touch with that silent majority of Canadians who really aren’t happy with the way the small-l liberals have set things up. Aren’t we awesome? Even our back benchers rock.”

It’s a no-lose.

I agree with your analysis, but I’ll add a caveat.

If any government re-banned abortion, or restricted it in a serious way, they’d be flushed out the pipes hard in the next election. Harper et al. might be fundagelical asshats, but I’m not totally convinced they’re that stupid. Nobody east of Saskatchewan or west of Jasper can get elected if they’re publicly anti-abortion. Harper knows that.

I think this is a distraction and nothing more. The Libs and the NDP are weak, and by stirring this pot, they’re getting the opportunity to show some leadership (“I am not reopening this debate…”) while the Lib and NDP founder and waffle.

Harper is a *MASTER* of politics. This is a political ploy and nothing more.

Times have changed. At last, here is an intelligent woman bravely articulating what many Ontarians feel and have been muttering amongst themselves. She has my support. Religions should be treated equally, and we should also bolster the separation between “church and state” (religion and government, or at least, religion and the law).
