I don’t know…when I was a kid there were a lot of fruit farms surrounding our school and big (and possibly crazy) kids would pick hard, unripe fruit and fling them at little kids. Parent were going to petition to have the fruit farms moved, but since those same parents owned the fruit farms, it never really went anywhere.

The proximity of the day care to stores that sell junk food certainly creates more long-term risk to the children than 100 gun stores.

There is a tendency now to try and pretend we can keep our kids safe by keeping them away from anything and everything that might possibly harm them. Antibiotic soaps everywhere. Soaps that are dispensed so the little darling doesn’t have to touch an icky possibly germy soap bar. The fact though is that the most dangerous things are the ones we accept all the time. The mom will drive junior anywhere yet thousands are killed every year by cars. Relatives and or friends are almost always the culprits in child harm but it’s the strangers we worry about and guns common on any street in Canada but not worrisome till someone actually sees them whether in a store or otherwise. Parents need to relax and enjoy their life and the life of their kids.

Agreed.
As a side note, I am a lot more paranoid about an estranged and violent father/mother showing up at my kids’ daycare or school than I am about the fact that they are both in close proximity to subsidized housing projects… the same would apply to a gun shop.

Agreed that this is perhaps not the best juxtaposition, at least from an optics point of view. There are other stores that sell firearms and ammunition, such as Canadian Tire, that are likely in similar close proximity to daycare facilities. It didn’t take long to find a preschool within 2 to 3 blocks of a hunting/camping/outdoor store on Merivale using Google. Granted it’s a little farther away than “two doors down”, but not that much in the grand scheme of things.

This culture of paranoia that’s spreading needs to be brought under control.
