Growing up as a teen in the 1970’s…

… I knew the first few chords of Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water”.

Every teenage boy did. It was the law.

Jon Lord was one of the best a his craft.

What I learned at my high school reunion…

… or how to teleport 31 years back in time without the aid of some serious hallucinogens.

  1. Most women age more gracefully than most men. This is a truism. And this is a qualifier for #2 below.
  2. Time is a great equalizer. Everyone gets older. Almost everyone gets fatter (this one displays a high degree of statistical variance). Almost everyone gets greyer or balder (yay!) or wrinklier (unless you’re like Pete and use Botox) or richer or poorer or happier or more miserable. And, well, most people are a helluva lot nicer.
  3. It IS possible to pick up where you left off with some old friends – despite a complete lack of contact for three decades. You know who I’m talking about.
  4. There were more smokers that I thought would be the case. Nothing wrong with this. I finally quit 8 years ago and hope that the rest of my old friends give it up as well. I’d like to see them again at our 60th and 70th birthday reunions…
  5. 50 year olds can laugh and party with the best of them!
  6. Revenge is a dish best served cold. Right, Brad? Classic!
  7. I’m starting to enjoy music from this century at least as much from the music from last.
  8. Thirty-one years is very hard number to get one’s head around… temporally speaking.
  9. Finally, we all grew up, and each in our own ways. But in the end, we are all, at heart, still the same people who we were oh-so long ago. Just older, and hopefully a little smarter.

Thanks to all who organised this event. And thanks to all of my old and dear friends for attending. It was great to see all of you! Hopefully we’ll do this again before too much more water has travelled under the Seguin Street bridge! And if ever in Ottawa…
