YES! Two smoking cessation aids now part of Ontario Drug Benefit Plan!!

This is great news!

When I quit 7 years ago, I used Zyban, the patch, nico-gum… everything I could get my hands on! And they worked!

Fortunately, the costs were covered under my drug plan… but most folks aren’t so lucky.

Lower future health care costs will many times over pay for the costs of this forward thinking initiative!

Now how is Hudak and his merry band of nay-sayers going to react to this? I mean, how can you argue against it? Win-win, right?

Naw, they’ll come up with some kind of distorted view of this… par for the course.

Kudos to the Ontario Grits for the timing of this announcement. Ol’ Tim is kinda being bounced around because of his sloppy handing of the abortion funding issue. Strike while the iron is hot, eh?

  1. Dave says:

I don’t think you get it yet. Whether something is good, works, and will actually save money in the long run, is of no concern to “real” politicians. The fact is the government is too big and should be taken apart and reduced whether or not what it does is working or worthwhile.
Besides if we got rid of all the anti smoking stuff the farmers in SW Ontario could get back to growing tobacco and the industry could get back to mega profits selling destructive stuff to teenagers. Then again private clinics could make a fortune selling cures to those crazy enough to try and quit smoking.

    • Politicians may not care beyond the next election, but “government” should… and government is a lot more than just politicians. Politicians debate and talk and bitch and moan, but the real work of government is done by bureaucrats.

Get a bunch of bureaucrats behind something, and even the mighty Harper will acquiesce.

  2. Now if this was paid for out of cig taxes, it would be really cool.

That’s the way it should work…

Cig addiction treatment funded directly from cig taxes.

Alcohol addiction treatment funded directly from liquor taxes.

Marijuana and drug addiction treatment funded directly from stoner taxes… oh, wait. WTF.

Gambling addiction treatment funded directly from taxes on gambling winnings. Oh, wait. double WTF.

Environmental preservation and clean up funded directly from gas and tire taxes.

    …/etc.
