Rioting in the streets of Vancouver

I don’t know what to say. I am almost speechless. Almost.

This was shameful. No. Excuses. Whatsoever.

Congrats to the Bruins.

And as a sidebar, I really hope that, when they win the Cup next year, Toronto fans show more class than the Canuck fans did last night. In fact, I’m sure that they will!

And yeah, I know that those thugs were not representative of all ‘Nuck fans, but there were at least a thousand or more rioters… and that does not look good on the City at all.

It also does not reflect well on the sport. The riots were all over international news wires and serve to solidify the image of the hockey fan as a goon.

Shame.

IF ONLY those people felt as strongly about the political situation here in Canada AND IF ONLY they could channel that energy in a positive and non-violent way.

Neeroc is absolutely right. In mid-afternoon radio stations were reporting throngs of people swarming in from the suburbs. Most didn’t have tickets for the game. Some of those were unquestionably massing in order to indulge in wanton hooliganism, win or lose.

Today we hunt these people. Their images were captured on hundreds of news and cellphone cameras, far too many for them to escape identification. People are furious and want them held accountable. It’s a daunting task for police to process all this but they will get these people.

That is something that struck as highly unusual. In many cases like these (e.g., the G 20 riots in Toronto), the hooligans take some precautions in order to conceal their identities. These yahoos couldn’t be bothered! You can clearly make out the faces of dozens if not hundreds of rioters! They will be caught.

They would have rioted no matter the outcome of the game. They came prepared to do damage and were heard chanting references to the 94 riots before the games (reported on CTV last night).

I completely agree and that makes it even more ridiculous, doesn’t it? It had little to do with hockey, I reckon, but hockey will be blamed…
