The Fraser Institute’s ranking of secondary schools

I have posted the rankings for the elementary schools in the OCDSB in a past entry and the same caveats apply.

Namely…

As a statistician, I do have some serious issues with rankings like these – much like the EQAO testing process itself – there is no context presented in order to interpret these numbers fully. Unknown are factors that can greatly influence a schools performance, like:

  • the percentage of students in ESL programs
  • proportion of special needs students
  • family income and household education
  • and others…

So, these rankings, while useful, must be looked at in the context of those other variables that may have a hand in determining the relative grades achieved in standardized tests. Please use them as one tool but not the only one if you feel so inclined to compare one school against another.
