July, 2010:

Thank you Dr. Sheikh

You have my utmost respect, sir.
It is not often in this day and age that someone stands on his principles.

We at the Bureau shall not forget this.

Iggy needs to step up

I wonder why it is taking Iggy so long to pass comment on the latest Cons misstep….

This whole cross country tour thing should really adopt some kind of “purpose”, don’t you think? I mean, I think it is a good decision to spend the summer this way- he hasn’t a choice, really. But should he be using the same tact that has been so successful for the ReformCons… That is, have an announcement, a pronouncement or a huff of righteous indignation each and every day.

Instead, he says this:

“If you pull up in a Tim Hortons in Napanee, there better be somebody there. It’s simple. You can’t win without troops,” Ignatieff said in an interview with the Star as he was ending his first week on the road. “So all of this is what’s changing. Not has to change — it is changing. And it’s my job to catalyze it, inspire it, you know, push it.”

Huh? Read the news, Iggy, say something about it and carry on. You need to make a jolt on the electoral landscape and speaking in tongues ain’t gonna cut it! My disdain for the Cons runs deep BUT the “sound bite a day” strategy works for them!

And please, the Tim Horton’s crowd isn’t your base in the first place! Do as I suggested a while back and shore up the support you can count on and concede what is lost…. else you might run into a 1993 PC scenario… just sayin’.

One other question: where’s Jack Layton these days? Or Elizabeth May? Have they taken the summer off?

Oh, and did everyone see this yesterday? Good data, eh?

Now guess who doesn't like to see numbers like these?

The Cons think the Provinces are “special interest groups”…

Someone should tell them.

@TonyClement_MP @johnsonWilliam i guess the provs are special interest groups? Premiers want say in census feud – http://bit.ly/cJyOMl

OC Transpo a keen student of the Harperites…

Again, where are the buses, OC Transpo? If your schedule goes into summer mode, at least tell us about it! Ten minutes at Hurdman before a 38 showed up!

Oh, I get it. You’re taking your cues from the Harperites. Cut back on services and the information sources used to measure whether or not said services have actually been, you know, cut back.

Oh, and according to the HP, Glenn Beck might be going blind. That’s truly sad. I mean, why isn’t it his voice that he’s losing?

Word of the day for the DeceptiCons

As part of my ongoing mission to enlighten the ignorant, I submit, the pleasure of Cons everywhere, the following word:

Obscurantism (French, obscurantisme, from the Latin obscurans, “darkening”) is the practice of deliberately preventing the facts or the full details of some matter from becoming known. There are two, common, historical and intellectual, denotations: 1) restricting knowledge—opposition to the spread of knowledge, a policy of withholding knowledge from the public, and, 2) deliberate obscurity—an abstruse style (as in literature and art) characterized by deliberate vagueness.

Friedrich Nietzsche said: “The essential element in the black art of obscurantism is not that it wants to darken individual understanding, but that it wants to blacken our picture of the world, and darken our idea of existence.”

Tomorrow: “Pork barrel politics“.

Arms are flappin’…

It always amazes me what happens to the ReformCon Wunderflock when they realise they may, just may, have made a poor call on a policy stance. Like geese defending their territory, they flap their wings at the closest possible targets – even one another – while loudly and obnoxiously honking indecipherable epithets.

I hate geese.

It is also hilarious to watch The Great Tactician slip into the shadows upon realising that he may have barked up the wrong tree, thus bringing down showers of acorns, thrown by the masses of chattering squirrels, clattering upon and around him.

The response trail is predictable for this government. It reads just like a routing document. Send out the Minister “responsible” for the applicable line department first to hold up an umbrella of denial and justification. Then, if that doesn’t work, then the Robot says “release the hounds!”, and various bobble heads with different degrees of intelligence coming trotting out with yet more and bigger umbrellas.

First, have a former minister announce that yes, the decision taken was indeed wise and good for Canada, given his vast knowledge of the file. And of course, he will add, this nonsense is just another Liberal scheme to deflect attention away from their leader’s plane tickets in his breast pocket.

He is, he will say, just visiting. You know.

When the squirrels heave a collective ho-hum and begin the assault anew, then Stevo brings out the big guns.

So, on the coming days and weeks, expect a parade of Bairds, Ambroses, Days and Toews to coming running to that tree. All holding up umbrellas while flapping their wings and honking words that at best are laughable and at worst incoherent.

It doesn’t matter if it is funding for maternal health, Gee-score security or whatever the latest brouhaha is all about, the pattern is always the same.

But watch, like the other times that those chattering rodents got their knickers in twists, Our Dear Leader will not budge an inch from that tree.

The mayorlarry rap

Word.

Maybe Lil Wayne can do this when he gets outta the hoosegow!

Constipation caused by the realization
Of a bogus Zero-Means-Zero affirmation
The promise broken became a transformation
Of run-away tax hikes exceeding inflation
Or the single-source fornication
Of giving away Lansdowne – no consultation
Or the bribing an opponent into temptation
Of inducements outside of regulations
Urban transit halted by the cessation
Of fair collective bargaining in spite of protestations
With Light Rail’s termination. It’s not our imagination
O’Brien is an abomination

Friday miscellany…

Seems like the Harperites have been giving lessons to the White House in how best to exploit the infrastructure funding they been dishing out as part of the economic recovery glorious slush fund.

I’ll be glad when all of the ugly signage is removed for good. But don’t expect that to happen until there is a change in government.

– Some polls are showing that the public mood is about as stable as the Great Wall… others are showing a Grit uptick… who is right?

– Rand Paul. Whatta dork. Yes, Mr. Paul, the Tea Baggers are a bunch of radical yee-haws.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A billboard created by an Iowa tea party group that compares President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Lenin is drawing sharp criticism – even from fellow tea party activists who have condemned it as offensive and a waste of money.

The North Iowa Tea Party began displaying the billboard in downtown Mason City last week. The sign shows large photographs of Obama, Nazi leader Hitler and communist leader Lenin beneath the labels “Democrat Socialism,” “National Socialism,” and “Marxist Socialism.”

Beneath the photos is the phrase, “Radical leaders prey on the fearful & naive.”

And yes, Canada has an equivalent. Though not as strong and public, you can bet that they have been behind many of the Con policy decisions lately. They DO have to cater to their core from time to time…

More OC Crapspo hi jinks
I just waited for 10 minutes to get a connecting bus from Hurdman to Tunney’s Pasture. In that time only two buses that were going as far west as Tunney’s showed up and one of them – a 34 – stopped at the far end of the platform before hurrying away, in spite of at least three would-be passengers trying to flag it down. Finally a 38 showed up and actually stopped to pick up riders. Imagine that! A driver thinking it his job to allow riders on the bus! And on a Friday too!

Gawd, their service sucks sometimes… I wonder when the next strike/lock-out will be?

Pretty soon, if mayorlarry manages somehow to get re-elected. The vid that was posted on YouTube by Jim Watson’s peeps was sure funny, but won’t go a long way in establishing Jimbo as a credible alternative. A lot of folks think that it was a little juvenile. Add this to the entry of Clive Doucet into the (why, Clive why?) and some left-of-centre vote splitting is almost certain… with a certain bald guy named larry taking full advantage of his appeal with the Timmie’s crowd.

Don’t count him out!

– BP. Boycott them and all of their products. Forever.

– Steinbrenner dies… and I won’t diss him… In fact, even if you thought of him as an egotistical, micromanaging blowhard, ya can’t argue the fact that he brought success to the franchise that everyone, including me, loves to hate.

– Did I mention that OC Transpo sucks?

– The World Cup is over for another 4 yrs. Some surprises and some scandals. England was completely underwhelming. Ghana was tragic. Brazil was amazing – until their final game. Italy and France sucked.

At least the EPL starts up again in about a month! Go Gunners!

And if I ever hear another vuvuzela, I will scream.

War of the PR campaigns

Banner on TORONTONAMO site.

Interesting to listen to the battle for the minds of Canadians being waged by, in one corner, the Harperites, Queen’s Parks and the T.O. cops… and in the other corner, the activist groups, community groups and individual Canucks.

At issue – did the cops step over the line during the Gee-Score protests?

As with most of these issues, the truth likely lies somewhere in betwixt and between. While I am sure that, cops being cops, some did get too rough, covered their badges and name tags, and acted as agents provacateurs. No doubt. And there is video evidence of this.

I posted a vid of a little lady blowing bubbles in the direction of the line of cops where one guy about 56 times bigger than her was being a real asshole and harrumphing that she would be charged with assault if one of the bubbles landed on the big guy. Then the vid cuts to the bubble blower being loaded into a van.  Yeah, I know the what-happened-in-between was edited out, but my point was that some members of the security forces were getting way overboard and letting their power go to their already inflated heads.

As for the demonstrators? For sure some of them went waaaaay over the line too. There is no excuse for vandalism and violence. As a pacifist, I believe that protests need not be violent and more sympathy can be garnered for the “cause” if one demonstrates civility. I personally despise those who destroy for whatever the cause may be.

But – and again, there is video evidence – the vast, VAST majority of the protesters were indeed civil. They didn’t throw things aside from epithets. They stayed within the rules. They acted civil. BUT, this god behaviour was not respected in several instances where the police broke up – often violently – groups that were clearly not doing anything wrong. They were exercising their right to freedom of expression and assembly.
