PS: CBSA can point to a MOUNTAIN of things that people have tried to smuggle in body cavities. That’s one of the most common ways to move small amounts of drugs and other small, illegal objects.

Flat packs up drugs in the ass crack. Vaginas full of little bags of coke. Rectal storage of condoms full of heroin. Flat, body-hugging packs of drugs (you can make bombs that way too). CBSA has seen it all… and that’s just the ones they catch now.

You may not buy it, but then again, I work in security. The value in that area is immediately obvious.

I desperately hope that our security measures are not driven by whatever the current system is breaking down leading to something really bad. Security should be pre-emptive… lives are saved that way.

I know people whose job it is to surf porn for a living. They assure me that the “uh uh uh tits” thing goes away really fast. I can’t foresee too much beavis-and-butthead-ism going on here.

Sorry Darin – I don’t buy your argument.
Hypothetically, any security system can be compromised. Machines are designed by humans and we are not infallible (well, I may be – but no one else is ).
The point being that I have not seen a documented case where the failure of the present system has led to something really bad. If the CBSA and the airports really want to tighten up on security, they may want to look at how easy it is for just anyone to wander around restricted areas… like those two politicos did a couple of months back.
Technology like this is the path to a slippery slope… and I see no need to take that step.
Oh – yeah the new captcha is better… Gordo found it for me…

Because some guy scanning you with a little wand is to easy to corrupt or be incompetent. It would be much harder, if you had two operators of such a machine, for scumbags to get through.

Example (true story): I go through the metal detector and set it off. The guy wands me and the wand goes off below my left shoulder. The guy taps that spot with the wand, resulting in a metallic “clink”. He asks “what’s that?” I say “it’s my sunglasses.” and HE LETS ME GO. I go… right to the supervisor and explain that his people need training.

Had I gone through the machine, I wouldn’t even have needed to get the wand. More to the point, if it had been a gun in a shoulder holster instead, and I’d gone through the machine, I probably wouldn’t be able to get on the plane.

There have, even in Canada, been documented incidents of metal detector wand people giving a bye to members of their own particular race or religious group (in particular Sikhs, as I recall).

In effect, use of a machine like this reduces opportunities for human error, grossly reduces opportunities for malice and incompetence, and would speed up the security check process. One big plus is that with this machine, you shouldn’t have to empty your pockets and remove your belt before going through.

As for perverts getting jobs as machine operators… well, that’s possible, I suppose. You don’t think the male wand operators pay closer attention to the hot women who set off the metal detector?

And for those who reckon, “big deal, I don’ care who looks at my nuts” — what about your kids, or your mom or your granny? What about the fact that this is extreme overkill? The penultimate invasion of privacy for no good reason. The ultimate will be when they start scanning your thoughts before you get on a plane to determine if you feel any ill-will toward the airline. And speaking of unnecessary security measures, I really resent that illegible Security Code I have to enter every time I make a comment on this blog!!!!!

Back in the days of print photography, I managed a photo lab. Had a bunch of young guys working for me. I constantly had to remind them it was immoral and illegal to print extra “adult” pictures and annotate them and leave them about the lab for coworkers enjoyment. Constantly.

So your comment about giving some security gaurds some entertainment is probably dead on. I just read a something about a nurse who got her jollies viewing bonus body parts in x-rays. People are people. They are going to do things that they shouldn’t. YouTube is probably going to be the least of it.
