It is utterly fantastic that a non-white has reached the pinnacle of political power in the U.S. It truly is. And I celebrate that. A black man leading the most powerful – well, uh, maybe it isn’t the MOST powerful these day – nation in the world is an accomplishment. BUT for we Canucks to be proning ourselves in front of him like this is just a little over the top.
I travel through the downtown to get home… gonna be a long ride on the bus tonite!

I totally and completely don’t get any of this. He hasn’t actually DONE anything yet. How do we elevate someone to the status of World Saviour before he’s even done anything? He’s SAID a lot of stuff, but even the stuff he’s said has been very politico-speak. He hasn’t said or promised anything of any real substance. He’s made all the right noises, too and I guess that’s enough. I don’t know why. Are we really that desperate for someone who appears not to be the people we’ve inflicted upon ourselves the last decade or so?

I kind of feel sorry for the guy… he’s inherited a giant shit sandwich from his predecessor. People are blowing sunshine up his rear end at a glorious rate just because he’s not an obvious hyper-religious sociopath like his predecessor.

But the truth is, he’s just a guy and he’s going to make a mistake or two. And when that happens, people are going to go utterly ape because expectations are so unreasonably high.

That’s when his road will start to get rocky.

It’s a bit of hero worshipping, isn’t it. Little brother Canada in awe and excitement that his cool older brother is coming to visit him first.

Me, I forgot he was even coming. Glad I don’t have to go downtown tomorrow.

Yup – I hear ya. I didn’t mean to imply that it is his party affiliation that attracts attention, rather that we have a (in your words) rational, educated, benevolently confident individual who happens to be a Democrat.

I’m in almost total agreement with you here. I would say, however, that it’s not his status as a Democrat that makes him more palatable to Canadians (and the rest of the world), but that he exudes an air of rational, educated, benevolent confidence, vice the previous Dear Leader of the USA who radiated uneducated, malicious, playground bully.
