The jig is up for the Conservatives!

Aha!

The PMO folks must be burning the midnight oil these days – they have to be a tad distressed over a couple of recent developments: one that reveals the true face of the Harperites and the other that can be classified as scandalous.

First of all, check out this article in the Globe and Mail.

For those of you who want the quick and dirty summary, here is the key info from the article:

“A well-known evangelical crusader is claiming credit for the federal government’s move to deny tax credits to TV and film productions that contain graphic sex and violence or other offensive content.

Charles McVety, president of the Canada Family Action Coalition, said his lobbying efforts included discussions with Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day and Justice Minister Rob Nicholson, and “numerous” meetings with officials in the Prime Minister’s Office.

“We’re thankful that someone’s finally listening,” he said yesterday. “It’s fitting with conservative values, and I think that’s why Canadians voted for a Conservative government.”

Mr. McVety said films promoting homosexuality, graphic sex or violence should not receive tax dollars, and backbench Conservative MPs and cabinet ministers support his campaign.

“There are a number of Conservative backbench members that do a lot of this work behind the scenes,” he said.

All along, Stevie and the boyz have told Canadians not to worry, there really was no social conservative agenda – hidden or not. This development provides the smoking-gun evidence that the wacko evangelicals do indeed have the ear of the PMO.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but this development may hinder the Conservative Reformers’ plans to win seats in urban Canada – whose denizens are typically more socially liberal than their rural kin. It should also throw a bit of a wet blanket over the prospects in Québec.

I’ll post a piece about the Chuck Cadman bribery scandal a little later.
