February, 2008:

Not too far-fetched?

Harper has already put in his order for these machines.

Diebold Accidentally Leaks Results Of 2008 Election Early

The jig is up for the Conservatives!

The PMO folks must be burning the midnight oil these days – they have to be a tad distressed over a couple of recent developments: one that reveals the true face of the Harperites and the other that can be classified as scandalous.

First of all, check out this article in the Globe and Mail.

For those of you who want the quick and dirty summary, here is the key info from the article:

“A well-known evangelical crusader is claiming credit for the federal government’s move to deny tax credits to TV and film productions that contain graphic sex and violence or other offensive content.

Charles McVety, president of the Canada Family Action Coalition, said his lobbying efforts included discussions with Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day and Justice Minister Rob Nicholson, and “numerous” meetings with officials in the Prime Minister’s Office.

“We’re thankful that someone’s finally listening,” he said yesterday. “It’s fitting with conservative values, and I think that’s why Canadians voted for a Conservative government.”

Mr. McVety said films promoting homosexuality, graphic sex or violence should not receive tax dollars, and backbench Conservative MPs and cabinet ministers support his campaign.

“There are a number of Conservative backbench members that do a lot of this work behind the scenes,” he said.

All along, Stevie and the boyz have told Canadians not to worry, there really was no social conservative agenda – hidden or not. This development provides the smoking-gun evidence that the wacko evangelicals do indeed have the ear of the PMO.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but this development may hinder the Conservative Reformers’ plans to win seats in urban Canada – whose denizens are typically more socially liberal than their rural kin. It should also throw a bit of a wet blanket over the prospects in Québec.

I’ll post a piece about the Chuck Cadman bribery scandal a little later.

A de-motivational poster.

Finally! A new post!

I have had a few folks (even some who are not related to me) ask why have I apparently abandoned Trashy’s World.

Well, it hasn’t so much an abandonment as it has a time allocation issue. No excuses, but family, work and life in general has kept me on my toes for the past several months.

Owen (who is 10 months old now – check out the picture!) has had sleeping issues galore that we think have been the result of reflux. We may be on our way to solving this, but the jury is still out. The impact on Colleen and I has been a general zombification of our daily routines…i.e., we stumble our sleep-deprived butts outta bed in the morning and try to get through each day without doing harm to ourselves and those around us. Poor little guy – not his fault. But I may ground him for a week when he is a teenager – just to be spiteful. So, what to talk about today?

Well, the Harperites are carrying on and bravely waving the banner that is the Politics of Cynicism. Hoping for the ideal conditions (shades of the péquistes, M. Harper?) for a majority government, they continue to stage-manage all aspects of public policy, carefully massaging each message to maximize return.

Funny enough, the über-control approach hasn’t paid off – at least according to the latest polling numbers.

While Canadians are becoming more comfortable with Stevie the PM, they are still holding back that full endorsement that will be needed to carry the Conservative Reformers to Valhalla. This is especially true in Ontario (outside of the redneck ridings) and, due to a slight resurgence of the Bloquistes, in Québec as well. These are two places where Stevie has to plunk down his coins and hope for the best if he has any shot at picking up the extra 30 or 40 seats he will need to become the nation’s true lord and master.

And this is the best the have been able to do despite a perceived lack of leadership at the helm of the Grits (and numerous Conservative attack ads that point this out), a booming economy (tho’ this may be ending or at least pulling back a degree or three), fewer casualties in Afghanistan, and a successful muzzling of all but a select few members of the Tory cadre.

But they still cannot break the piñata for a shot at the real prize. Maybe, at least outside of Alberta, we Canucks aren’t as gullible as the Harperites think!

One other thing – how about those Yanks! Look at them! The next President of their fine nation will either be a:

  1. Woman
  2. Black guy
  3. Or a guy who spent 5 years in a bamboo cage

What do we have?

  1. A tubby white guy
  2. A white guy with a moustache
  3. A white guy from Quebec

(Sorry – I chose to leave out the BQ and the Greens.)

All that to say that we Canadians should perhaps temper the smugness meter a tad. The Americans are going to make history and all we can do is hope and pray that one white guy doesn’t screw up the country more than the other white guys.
